haha. Don't worry, a couple on my flist who have played FFXII do NOT like Balthier. XD They found his mannerisms; his dribble-drabble quite annoying. See? Not everyone can see eye to eye. I'm surprised that he's the most sought out man in the FFXII among fans in general.
Me? I enjoy having him in my party along with Basch when I use Ashe. XD But I find his way of handling the sword a bit off setting. He's fantastic at holding guns! And not bad with the bow/arrows.
But you're right: It makes the imagination less attractive. It isn't for the purpose of writing a novel where a writer can write true characterization. I think, perhaps, in many fandoms, it's more or less the god-like superiority of a man to fire up the rapid beating of a fangirl's heart. XDD: No matter, how unimaginative or Gary-Stu it may be. More or less, it's a form of idol-ship. So - erm, that's my understanding.
You really are very clever with understanding the personalities of the FFXII characters, from their flaws to their strengths. Bravo on you. ^^ Basch can be a stick-in-the-mud, but he's actually not with Ashe, in my opinion.
It's with Ashe that he can actually stand up for himself, say clever and straight-forward things to her. Just like he can with his brother. It is with those two that I find his interactions to be most profoundly interesting.

Oh, on your little Ashe, I do see her as manipulative and a bit conniving as a little girl, but with a good heart. Not overtly spoiled mind you. But she's brash, she's straight with people, and still kind. I think, with her exposure with common street people in the game, plus with sky-pirates/thieves, it has brought her to a deeper understanding that not everyone are cookie-cutters. Plus, the fact that she has lost everything beforehand.
