Oh I see, I didn't think about that: Balthier being god-like. Perhaps I need to read more fics and find out. I never realized that in the Bal/Ashe fics.
I've always read Ashe as the complete opposite: sweet and unsure of herself. If anything, she's only vulnerable because of the position she's in: she's desperate. She seeks other people's aid because she is basically 'nothing' - no home, no country, no one, and only Vossler protected her. Which switched over to Basch naturally. I think what others misinterpret her feelings of being 'harsh' and 'cold', tough and all that - the way she acted to Vaan and crew, and to Basch. Maybe. But honestly, that's a stretch, because all through the game, she's mostly quiet - observing, but her mind is always alert, active. I never read anywhere that she would sacrifice people for her own wants.
